For me, one of the best parts of arriving in a town where absolutely nothing is going on is that it focuses my attention. These are the heroic towns of Italy (and, the rest of the world for that matter - the ones that remind us that it’s not the “things” we see in a place that tell us about that place, but it’s who we meet, how we engage with light, food, rhythm, language… all of it.

I LOVE the idea of seeking out no-name towns!

When I first moved to Rome I would sometimes show up at Termini with a bag packed for a day trip and then just take the next train going to a place that was 90 minutes away or closer and that I'd never been to. That's how I discovered Rieti, Velletri, Isola di Liri, Manziana, and a couple of other places that I still have a nostalgia for. They were a mixed bag, but I always had fun.

For some reason, I stopped doing that. I should try it again.

I'm sorry for the loss of your pooch.
